Facebook bans ads from The Epoch Times after huge pro-Trump buy NBC By Brandy Zadrozny and Ben Collins By hiding its multimillion-dollar dark money ad spend, the organization bypassed Facebook’s political advertising transparency rules.

“Until mid-July, The Epoch Times had placed its ads through accounts that clearly labeled their affiliation to the wider organization. Through the umbrella account, Coverage of the Trump Presidency by The Epoch Times, the news organization spent $1.5 million on more than 11,000 Trump-friendly Facebook ads within the last year.

“In May, after a popular newsletter from the progressive nonprofit ACRONYM highlighted The Epoch Times’ major Facebook spending, journalist Judd Legum noted in his newsletter how many of the ads were in violation of Facebook’s policies. NBC News reporters reached out to The Epoch Times in June, prompting a defensive open letter from the site’s publisher.

“By July, The Epoch Times’ official accounts were no longer running any ads on Facebook, according to searches of Facebook’s Ad Library, its transparency tool that is supposed to make it easy to find information behind ads “related to politics or issues of national importance.”

“The ads are still running, just not under the official accounts. By mid-July, Epoch Times ads had shifted to multiple pages with opaque names such as Honest Paper, Patriots of America, Pure American Journalism and Best News. Other Epoch Times ads were sponsored by a now-defunct page called The News Express.

“The Epoch Times has spent more than $450,000 on thousands of ads from these five accounts in the last 30 days. It is unclear whether there are other accounts.

“Multiple anonymous patrons now appear on the “paid for” section of each ad. Where Epoch Times ads used to be clearly marked as being paid for by The Epoch Times, ads now claim to have been paid for by groups such as “Chronicle Media” or “MarketFuel Subscription Services.””

@MaddowBlog“This media entity is right now the largest source of paid pro-Trump content on Facebook other than the Trump re-election campaign. This is as big as it gets in pro-Trump media right now.”

In 2016, Epoch Media Group hired a basic journalism staff to start pushing the evangelical movement and Trump.  They hired a Republican strategist which got them into CPAC and aligned with Republican celebrities. NDTV makes news videos, Epoch Times is the newspaper, and Shen Yun, the dance show.

A Newspaper Banned In China Is Now One Of Trump’s Biggest Defenders BuzzFeed Hayes Brown, October 22, 2018 updated October 23, 2018

“The Epoch Times, a newspaper with links to the Falun Gong movement, is the purest outlet of the Trump movement. In recent weeks, the newspaper — offered for free in most US cities and published around the world — has published articles and graphics that would be a credit to Breitbart, promoting some of the most strident and paranoid claims from the Trump administration and its defenders.

“In one tour de force infographic, published last week, the paper laid out in excruciating and sweeping detail the claim that “Spygate” — the claim that the real heart of the Russia investigation is illegal American spying on Trump’s campaign — is “the biggest political scandal in modern history.”

“A section devoted entirely to the Trump presidency on the Epoch Times’ website is remarkably free of the scandals that have plagued the administration since before the president was sworn in. Instead, the stories include a photo essay on a recent Trump rally in Montana, an “Angel Mom’s” push for the president to seal the border with Mexico, and Trump’s call for Sen. Elizabeth Warren to apologize after her DNA test last week. Other political stories show a clear nod to Trump’s base, including one with the headlineDemocrat Operative for Soros-Funded Group Arrested for Assaulting Republican Campaign Manager.

“The site’s opinion section offers an even clearer stance on Trump’s time in office — often written by authors without much in the way of clout. “Our leftist media describes the Trump presidency as tumultuous — a construct they have manufactured, one that doesn’t exist,” one article claims. Another chides the media’s coverage of the Brett Kavanaugh saga, noting that “[l]ike Trump, Kavanaugh was depicted as the nominee of white male privilege and ‘toxic masculinity,’ a beer-swilling Deplorable and an avatar of creeping authoritarianism.” Even in pieces that don’t directly deal with Trump — like one that argues that the endgame of climate change advocacy is socialism — the administration’s line holds.

“Being independent, we investigate issues overlooked — or avoided — by other media outlets,” Jan Jekielek, a senior editor with the Epoch Times, told BuzzFeed News in an emailed response to questions about the paper’s editorial stance. “We do this because we believe journalism must play the role of being truly responsible to society. We aim to highlight solutions and what’s good in society, including in our reporting on the Trump administration, rather than focusing on the conflicts that divide us.”

“Part of that mission, it seems, involves including a story praising the new movie from Diamond and Silk, who are Trump supporters and social media stars, among the Editor’s Picks section of the website. (The movie has been almost entirely overlooked by everyone but right-wing press.) The byline of that article is credited to “Epoch Times Staff.” It also includes publishing an article — written by an author of “Nobody Asked For My Opinion … But Here It Is Anyway!” — claiming that the media has “hidden” a key part of the Jamal Khashoggi disappearance story.

“When asked about the infographic, Jekielek said the Epoch Times “stand[s] behind the findings of the infographic and accompanying article, which provide a factual analysis of individuals and events, along with extensive sourcing and references for anyone to independently verify.”

“After this article’s publication, editor-in-chief Jasper Fakkert published a letter to the Epoch Times’ readers to “offer a few thoughts” about the paper’s editorial approach.”

Falungong: The movement that rattled Beijing Daily Mail By AFP

The German Edition of the Falun Gong-Affiliated ‘Epoch Times’ Aligns with the Far Right China File September 23, 2017 “But the German-language edition of the newspaper, which went web-only in 2012, has become a favored platform for far-right nativism, attracting readers who oppose immigration and support groups such as the far-right populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) and anti-immigrant protest group Pegida. As such, Epoch Times Deutschland has become known as a member of the far-right media scene, in the same club as Russia’s state-funded outlets RT and Sputnik, and Kopp Report, a website known for promoting conspiracy theories and right-wing populism.”

RationalWiki “Falun Dafa materials often mention a 2-billion year old nuclear reactor in Africa, which is an artifact of an advanced ancient civilization.[29][9][8] While the reactor in question definitely exists,[30] all available evidence suggests that it has formed naturally, without any intervention from ancient intelligence. (Mis)Intepretation by low-level Falun Gong instructor and missionaries often blends this idea into the more indigenous notion of an afterlife, so self-flagellation from removal of palatine uvula to ritual suicides are not uncommon even a few years after the crackdown.

“Besides its usual anti-PRC diatribes that ask readers to “resign” from the Chinese Communist Party regardless of actual membership, the paper often publishes woo and conspiracies such as chemtrails,[38] UFOs,[39] and an entire section titled “Beyond Science”.[40] The Beyond Science section includes such things as “12 Million-Year-Old Vehicle Tracks“,[41] ancient Sumerian spaceships,[42] and hype over meditation[43] and near-death experiences.[44]

“Former employees noted the secrecy of the publication’s ownership and funding, and tendency to promote red-baiting as well as anti-abortion and homophobic views.[16] Other former writers noted its almost slave labor-like work environment, where they need to write five articles per day and reach 100,000 views. Falun Gong-associated editors then remove mentions of issues which conflicts with “traditional values” as well as those unfavorable to Trump.[16]

“Recently, the German edition has taken an anti-Muslim bent, with unverified stories such as that German schools banned Christian festivals to appease Muslims,[45], and a gang of refugees kidnapping and raping a German schoolgirl [46]. A German media report found that the paper offers favorable coverage to right wing populist, anti-immigrant groups like Alternative für Deutschland and PEGIDA, presenting them as “guardians of democracy”, and accused the German public broadcasters of “media bias”. So far, its attempts to bed German far right has paid off, gathering over 4 million views in January 2016, and becoming one of the favorite media sources of PEGIDA supporters.[47][48] ”

Ben Collins August 20, 2019 Thread, on Threadreaderapp @oneunderscore_”New from me + @brandyzadrozny”

Trump, QAnon and an impending judgment day: Behind the Facebook-fueled rise of The Epoch TimesAugust 20, 2019 Brandy Zadrozny and Ben Collins “Started almost two decades ago with a stated mission to ‘provide information to Chinese communities to help immigrants assimilate into American society,’ The Epoch Times now wields one of the biggest social media followings of any news outlet. New Tang Dynasty’s 2017 revenue, according to IRS records, was $18 million, a 150 percent increase over the year before. It spent $16.2 million. That exponential growth came around the same time The Epoch Times expanded its online presence and increased its ad spending, honing its message on two basic themes: enthusiastic support for Trump’s agenda, and the exposure of what the publication claims is a labyrinthian, global conspiracy led by Clinton and former President Barack Obama to tear down Trump. One such conspiracy theory, loosely called “Spygate,” has become a common talking point for Fox News host Sean Hannity and conservative news websites like Breitbart.

@oneunderscore_“The Epoch Times is the largest pro-Trump spender on Facebook. It’s run by a religious sect that believes judgment day, which sends those they label “communists” to Hell, is 30 years late—and that Trump is making it happen. It’s impossible to get through the scope of this story in a few tweets, but I’m going to try. The Epoch Times is sometimes the most-viewed news creator on all of Facebook, Youtube and Twitter. In April, it outranked ANY other news outlet in video views. It’s run by people who “believe that Trump was sent by heaven to destroy the Communist Party”  NBC

@oneunderscore_“Epoch Times’ senior editorial are quietly Falun Gong practitioners, a religious group now based in a compound in Dragon Springs, NY. At the compound, use of medicines is discouraged, and visa-based arranged relationships are common, ex-practitioners say.

@Oneunderscore_”The Epoch Times hired non-Falun Gong members to cover the 2016 election.”

NBC “Tiger Huang, a former Dragon Springs resident who was on a U.S. Student visa from Taiwan, said She was set up on three dates on the compound, and she believed her ability to stay in the U.S. was tied to the arrangement. It’s like we were supposed to be fighting so-called liberal propaganda by making our own,” said a former Trump campaign reporter.”

@oneunderscore_“He said it was like working at a troll farm.

NBC“The worst was the Pulse shooting,” Klett said, referring to the 2016 mass shooting in which 50 people including the gunman were killed at a gay nightclub in Florida. ‘We weren’t allowed to cover stories involving homosexuality, but that bumps up against them wanting to cover Islamic terrorism. So I wrote four articles without using the word gay.’“QAnon is highly stigmatized among people trying to push the Spygate message. They know how toxic QAnon is,” View said. “Spygate leaves out the spiritual elements, the child sex trafficking, but it’s certainly integral to the QAnon narrative.”

@oneunderscore_”The Epoch Times’ senior editorial staff, sometimes the largest video publisher on all of social media, quietly runs one of the largest Qanon channels on YouTube. It has over 33 million views, including “13 BLOODLINES & their Diabolical End Game.”

NBC“One Qanon video, titled “QANON-7 facts the MEDIA (MSM) Won’t Admit” has almost 1 million views on YouTube. Other videos in the Channel’s Qanon playlist, which include videos about 9/11 conspiracy theories and onte titled “13 BLOODLINES & their Diabolical End Game,” gained hundreds of thousands of views each.”

@oneunderscoreThe Epoch Times, whose staff believe judgment day is 30 years late and Trump is helping it go down, has allies in the White House. It had a 40-minute Trump Tower interviewwith Lara Trumpthis year. The president’s FB page shared them a half-dozen times.”

@oneunderscore_”No one on Facebook spends more promoting Donald Trump than the Epoch Times. Millions were dropped on 11,000 ads in the last six months, more than most Democratic presidential candidates. They use the ad money to push Qanon-lite.

NBCTravis View, a researcher and podcaster who studies the QAnon movement, said The Epoch Times has sanitized the conspiracy theory by pushing Spygate, which drops the wildest and more prurient details of QAnon while retaining its conspiratorial elements.

“QAnon is highly stigmatized among people trying to push the Spygate message. They know how toxic QAnon is,” View said. “Spygate leaves out the spiritual elements, the child sex trafficking, but it’s certainly integral to the QAnon narrative.”

@oneunderscore_”But wait! Isn’t The Epoch Times a non-profit dedicated to providing “information to Chinese communities to help immigrants assimilate into American society”? How and why are they spending millions to boost Trump on Facebook? Good question!”

NBC“The outlet’s opacity makes it difficult to determine an overall structure, but it is loosely organized into several regional tax-free nonprofits. The Epoch Times operates alongside the video production company, NTD, under the umbrella of The Epoch Media Group, a private news and entertainment company whose owner executives have declined to name, citing concerns of “pressure” that could follow.”

@Oneunderscore_“When we reached out to The Epoch Times for comment on this story, they responded by publishing an article called “Our Response to NBC News’ Inappropriate Questions.” It included this line. It seems that all or most of the Epoch Times reporters and editors and executives are also Falun Gong practitioners. How does the practice of Falun Gong inform or influence the Epoch Times’ coverage? The question assumes that individuals’ personal beliefs are a fit subject of inquiry. Would NBC ask about the role of the faith in the work of a New York Times reporter who happened to be Jewish?“

@oneunderscore_“Not knowing what was in our story, conservative figureheads quickly rallied around The Epoch Times. This is a Devin Nunes tweet linking to their response to us. “  @DevinNunes“Odd investigative reporting. Congrats to @EpochTimes.”

@oneunderscore“Another Epoch Times mystery we couldn’t figure out: On September 12thof last year, anEpoch Times photographer handed Donald Trump a manila envelope as he exited the East Room of the White House.”

***White House reviews incident involving Epoch Times photographer handing a folder to Trump Washington PostBy David Nakamura

September 18, 2018  “The White House has reviewed an incident last week in which a news photographer for the Epoch Times, a publication banned in China for its critical coverage, stepped into a restricted area and handed President Trump a folder during an official event.

“The photographer, identified by other photojournalists as Samira Bouaou, passed the purple-colored folder to Trump as he was walking out of the East Room on Sept. 12 after delivering remarks at a reception for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

“In 2006, an Epoch Times reporter, who had obtained a press credential to cover Chinese President Hu Jintao’s arrival on the South Lawn for a visit with President George W. Bush, shouted out, calling on Bush in English to stop Hu “from killing” and “persecuting the Falun Gong” — a spiritual group that has been outlawed by the Chinese Communist Party. The Falun Gong has accused the Chinese government of harvesting organsfrom political prisoners who are executed.

Bouaou, whose Instagram account features photos purportedly taken by her at other White House events, congressional hearings and Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki in July, could not be reached for comment.“

ZHANG ESTABLISHES CHAIR IN THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE StonyBrookUniversity November 21, 2015  “In what he called an opportunity to “support an important institution in his neighborhood,” Huayi Zhang, Ph.D., a researcher at Renaissance Technologies, has established an endowed chair in the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. The Zhang Family Endowed Chair in Immunology, created with a $1 million pledge from Dr. Zhang, will allow Stony Brook to recruit a leader to advance our understanding of the immune system in health and disease. Zhang says he believes Stony Brook School of Medicine has the potential to make breakthroughs in this important field, and the endowed professorship will help the University progress toward that goal. Though not a graduate of Stony Brook himself, Zhang said he was inspired by the recent transformational gift from his former boss, Jim Simons. Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation pledged $150 million — the largest philanthropic gift in Stony Brook history — to support the School of Medicine and other University initiatives. Dr. Zhang’s gift will be matched dollar for dollar through the Simons Challenge Grant, bringing the level of the endowment to $2 million.

@mopeng “Epoch Media Group works closely with Facebook.” epochmediagroup.kr/us/values/FAQ/

“American urbanites may recognize the Epoch Times from its quietly ubiquitous presence at corner newsstands in many U.S. cities. A newspaper closely affiliated with Falun Gong, a group whose reclusive leader, Li Hongzhi, resides in the United States, the Epoch Times U.S. edition isn’t easy to place on the U.S. political spectrum. Its editorial slant exists primarily to promote the views of the Falun Gong and its leadership’s staunch opposition to the Chinese Communist Party (C.C.P.). The newspaper’s coverage of unrelated U.S. and international issues is otherwise banal.

“But the German-language edition of the newspaper, which went web-only in 2012, has become a favored platform for far-right nativism, attracting readers who oppose immigration and support groups such as the far-right populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) and anti-immigrant protest group Pegida. As such, Epoch Times Deutschland has become known as a member of the far-right media scene, in the same club as Russia’s state-funded outlets RT and Sputnik, and Kopp Report, a website known for promoting conspiracy theories and right-wing populism.

“The Falun Gong newspaper’s German website’s hard swing to the right may just be a business decision designed to maximize clicks in a newly xenophobic political environment. But it also could reflect the staunchly racist views of the movement’s founder, affectionately known as “Master Li” by many followers, who has taught that miscegenation produces flawed children and brittle societies.

“Since 2015, Europe has faced its largest migrant crisis since World War II as millions of refugees fleeing the Islamic State and the civil war in Syria poured across borders. While many Germans, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, welcomed asylum-seekers with open arms, the influx of largely Muslim migrants has also sparked a nativist backlash. Across Europe, anti-immigrant sentiment, combined with long-standing economic troubles and a widening gap between rich and poor, has fueled the rise of far-right populist parties.

“Epoch Times Deutschland appears to have ridden this wave of right-wing outrage, according to a March 2016 investigation by online outlet Meedia, which reports on the German media industry. The Epoch Times Deutschland slant should sound familiar to Americans, who over the past year have witnessed the triumph of populism and rising distrust of traditional media. Epoch Times Deutschland’s reports tend to show Pegida and AfD members in a sympathetic light, while casting doubt on mainstream media and politicians. Recent articles report claims that ARD, a German public broadcaster, has “biased” coverage of Pegida; present the AfD as the guardian of democracy; and frequently cast anti-immigrant statements by politicians as reasonable.”

How Falun Gong views the mix-blood 银川晚报 China Association for Cultic Studies 2009-04-08 “Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, says that the mixed blood, the offspring of different races marriage or “hybrid,” is rootless and aberrant race, indicating that the human moral today is extremely bad. According to Li Hongzhi, the existence of mixed-blood is a plot of alien beings to damage the link between human being and the heaven. When he lectured in Switzerland he said: ‘The alien beings mix up the races and separate humans from gods.’ ‘This science was set up by aliens. Their purpose was to unify human beings and simplify their thoughts to the point of being as uniform as machines.'”
